Press & Statements

Management does not typically respond to media inquiries. These statements are provided as a courtesy.

The following statements have been issued by Hotel Genovie Management in response to public enquiries, media requests, and matters that Management determined warranted a considered response. Members of the press are asked not to contact the hotel directly. All further statements will be issued through this page, when and if Management determines them appropriate.

Issued: November 2023

Statement Regarding the Events of the Fourth Floor

Hotel Genovie acknowledges that a guest occupying a room on the fourth floor contacted local emergency services during the night of the 14th of November. Management cooperated fully with responding personnel, who were extended every courtesy upon their arrival.

The guest in question was found to be in good health and was discovered in their room, which they had not, to the best of anyone's knowledge, left during the hours in question. The cause of the guest's distress has been attributed, by the responding personnel and by the guest themselves upon reflection, to a vivid and disorienting dream.

The hotel considers this matter closed. The guest remains registered at the hotel.

Statement Regarding the Photograph

Management is aware of the photograph currently circulating on several social media platforms, which purports to show a figure in the east wing corridor of Hotel Genovie. We confirm that the photograph was taken within our establishment. We confirm that the corridor was, to our knowledge, unoccupied by guests at the time the photograph was taken.

Management has no further comment on the nature or identity of the figure depicted. We ask that the photograph not be shared further — not for legal reasons, and not because the image is inaccurate, but because Management believes it is unkind to the subject. They did not consent to being photographed. This matters to us.

Statement Regarding the Guest Who Has Not Checked Out

Management wishes to address the ongoing enquiries received from the family of a guest who arrived at Hotel Genovie in March of 2022 and whose whereabouts have since been a subject of some dispute.

We wish to state clearly: the guest remains registered at Hotel Genovie. They have not checked out. Their room is prepared daily and kept in readiness. Management has spoken with the guest on several occasions and is entirely satisfied with their wellbeing. The guest is, in Management's assessment, content.

The guest has, on multiple occasions, declined to receive outside correspondence and has specifically requested that Management not forward communications from their family. Management respects this decision. It is not Management's role to mediate family matters, nor to override the clearly stated preferences of a guest in good standing.

We understand this response may be frustrating for the family involved. We are sorry for this. We cannot do otherwise.

Statement Regarding the Online Reviews

Management has noted that Hotel Genovie has, over recent years, accumulated a number of reviews across various online hospitality platforms. We are grateful for this attention.

We note that several of these reviews come from individuals who cannot be verified as having stayed at the hotel during the stated period. Several others originate from accounts associated with individuals who cannot currently be reached through conventional means. Management does not dispute any of the reviews. We find them, on the whole, fair.

We further note that Hotel Genovie has never received a rating below four stars. Management considers this a source of considerable satisfaction. We have never pursued ratings or solicited reviews. Guests who choose to write about their stays do so of their own accord, often long after the fact, and sometimes from circumstances that Management is not in a position to describe.

Statement Regarding the Construction Enquiries

In response to several enquiries received by telephone and in writing regarding sounds reported in the lower level of the hotel: this is routine maintenance.

Management does not anticipate completing this work on a conventional timeline. Guests may notice intermittent sounds from beneath the dining room floor, particularly during the late evening service and in the hours before dawn. Management considers these sounds unremarkable. Guests with concerns are welcome to raise them at the front desk, where a member of staff will provide reassurance to the best of their ability.

Management thanks guests for their patience and understanding.

Statement Regarding the Mirror on the Third Floor Landing

Several guests have enquired, over an extended period, about the large mirror on the third floor landing — specifically regarding its age, its provenance, and whether it can be removed.

The mirror has been in place since the hotel's founding. Its provenance is not documented in any record that Management has been able to locate. It cannot be removed. This has been attempted once, during the 1978 renovation. Management prefers not to describe the circumstances surrounding that attempt beyond noting that the mirror remains where it has always been.

Guests who find the mirror distressing are advised to use the alternative staircase. Guests who find the mirror interesting are advised to exercise the same restraint they would extend to any other guest.

For Members of the Press

Hotel Genovie does not employ a publicist. Management has issued all statements it currently intends to issue. Press enquiries directed to the hotel by telephone or post will not receive a response. This is not hostility. The hotel simply has nothing further to add, and we find that adding nothing further is often the most accurate course of action available to us.
